The Boston Bruins faced off against the St. Louis Blues at TD Garden in Boston, MA on Monday night. The Bruins entered the game on a four-game point streak with three wins and one overtime loss in the last four games. The Blues entered the game on a three-game losing streak.
The Bruins won their game against the Blues in St. Louis earlier this season on Jan. 13 with a 4-3 overtime win as Brad Marchand scored two goals to reach 900 career points and Charlie McAvoy clinched the win with an overtime goal.
In the first two periods, the Blues shut out the Bruins by scored two goals in each period with Kasperi Kapenen, Robert Thomas, Kevin Hayes, and Brandon Saad all scoring for the Blues. Thomas’s goal in the first period was off a two-man power-play advantage after penalties from Charlie Coyle and Trent Frederic caused a 5-on-3 powerplay.
In the second period, a goal from Justin Brazeau was called off after Blues interim Head Coach Drew Bannister challenged for an offside call from Brazeau himself, and he was successful in taking off that goal.
The Bruins scored their only goal of the game when David Pastrnak scored his 41st goal of the season in the third period while being assisted by Kevin Shattenkirk and Pavel Zacha. Also in the third period, the Bruins would pull goaltender Jeremy Swayman for an extra skater to try to cut the deficit yet they allowed an empty-net goal from Alexey Toropchenko to seal the 5-1 loss for the Bruins.
The Bruins will travel north to Montreal to face their biggest rival, the Canadiens on Thursday Night at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on NESN/NESN360.
