The Providence Friars women’s basketball team hosted St Johns at the Joe Mullaney Gymnasium on Saturday evening. Providence had gotten off to a 2-0 start in Big East play, but we’re looking to snap a three-game skid against the Red Storm.

St John’s got off to the hot start as they led 17-7 after the first quarter. The Friars took over the second and third quarters, however, and they led by as much as eight in the third quarter.

St John’s would make a comeback, however, and the 20th Providence turnover of the game led to a layup by Ber’Nyah Mayo that gave the Red Storm a 41-40 lead 6:30 remaining.

What was keeping that game close at that point was that both teams were shooting about the same from the field – 40 percent for St John’s and 37 percent for Providence – and the Friars were out-rebounding the Red Storm 37-17.

Down by six with 20 seconds left, Brynn Farrell knocked down a layup and hit a foul shot to make it a 49-46 game. Farrell, who led the Friars in scoring in this game, also recorded her second double-double of the season.

Ultimately, it was St John’s Unique Drake’s eighth 20 point performance of the season that gave the Red Storm the 55-48 win over Providence. The loss is the Friars’ first Big East loss of the season and their fourth consecutive against St John’s.

Providence will be on the road for their next game aa they take on #12 UConn on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
