The Boston College Eagles hosted the third-ranked Florida State Seminoles at Alumni Stadium in Boston, MA on Saturday afternoon. The 1-1 Eagles were coming off a 31-28 win over in-state team Holy Cross last Saturday. The 2-0 Seminoles defeated Southern Miss in their home opener last Saturday night.
The Eagles received the ball to start the game and were able to move the ball down the field on a 7-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 32-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Thomas Castellanos to redshirt sophomore wide receiver Lewis Bond. The play that got Boston College into Seminoles territory was a 35-yard pass play to graduate receiver Ryan O’Keefe.
Florida State was able to convert on a 4th and 3 on their first possession, but were unable to get into the end zone. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald kicked a 30-yard field goal to put the Seminoles on the board. Boston College still led 7-3 at the 5:59 mark in the first quarter.
The Eagles then converted on a fourth down on their next possession, a two-yard run on a 4th and 1. A few plays later, Castellanos ran for 29 yards before completing a pass to Joseph Griffin to the Florida State 15 yard line.
Another Castellanos run got the ball to the six-yard line, bringing up another fourth down for the Eagles on this drive. This would also be the end of the first quarter with Boston College on top 7-3.
They would convert the fourth down on the first play of the second quarter, but would be unable to score on three plays. Ian Connor successfully kicked a 21-yard field goal to make it a 10-3 game at the 13:22 mark in the second quarter.
The Seminoles tied the game with a six-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass from Jordan Travis to tight end Jaheim Bell. They would take their first lead on a two-yard touchdown run from Trey Benson.
Boston College would punt on their final two drives and Florida State took their 17-10 lead into the half.
The Seminoles extended their lead to 24-10 with Travis’ second touchdown, a four-yard strike to Preston Daniel. Castellanos would be intercepted on the first play of the next Eagles’ drive, and the Seminoles scored just two plays later as defensive lineman DJ Lindy scored from a yard out, making it 31-10 in favor of Florida State.
A Kyle Robichaux touchdown make the score 31-16 at the end of the third quarter. A scoop and score by the Eagles defense and a touchdown run from Castellanos made it a 31-29 game at the 5:19 mark in the fourth quarter. The Eagles had scored 19 consecutive points at that point.
Boston College would be forced to punt on a 4th and 24 late in the fourth, and a school record 18th penalty of the game against the Eagle gave the Seminoles a first down. They were then able to run out the clock to end the game with the final score of 31-29.
The Eagles will be on the road for the first time this season next week as they take on Louisville. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
