The Massachusetts Pirates were in Frisco, TX on Saturday night as they took on the Fighters in Week 5 action in the Indoor Football League. Both teams came into the game with undefeated records and were looking to keep their unbeaten streak going. The Pirates were also coming off a very early bye in Week 4.
Alejandro Bennifield would miss his second consecutive game with an injury. This left Anthony Russo to start for the second time.
After the Fighters blocked a Josh Gable field goal on the Pirates first possession, the Fighters scored first when TJ Edwards found Phaz McClurge on a deep pass down the sideline. The Pirates tied it with Jimmie Robinson scoring his first touchdown of the night and his seventh of the season.
After the top two teams in the league went back and forth for a little bit, a deuce for Fighters kicker Bryce Crawford made it 22-14 in favor of Frisco. Russo threw a touchdown, but the Pirates couldn’t convert the tying two-point conversion, so the score remained 22-20.
Edwards would find Jerm Smith on a wide-open touchdown to make the score 29-20 with 22 seconds left. Massachusetts attempted a fake field goal attempt at the end of the half, but it was to no avail, leaving the score 29-20 at halftime.
Frisco pulled away after the Pirates were unable to convert a fourth down down 42-27. Jimmy Smith scored another touchdown to make the score 49-27 with 5:31 left in the third quarter.
In the end, the Pirates couldn’t overcome the deficit they found themselves in and lost 56-39. They will be back on the road next week to take on the Quad City Steamwheelers.
