The Main South Cougars opened their season against the Abby Kelley Foster Bears earlier this season with a 94-46 win, and Wednesday night when The Bears Hosted the Cougars at home most people expected more of the same.
Abby Kelley made sure to let Main South know that was then and this is now as they jumped out to an immediate 5-0 lead. But then Main South center number 13 Abiezer Rivera woke up and went on a run of his own, scoring 6 of the teams first 8 as they took the lead 8 to 7. From there number 12 Cheyton Marshall Main South’s Guard and Captain took over the game scoring 11 of his 29 points in the first quarter accounting for half of the Cougars first quarter points.
The end of that quarter the score was 25-12 and Main South kept their foot on the gas all night long.
Coach Ojeda had the Cougars in a press and a 3-2 which caused steals and layups growing their lead by the quarter increasing their lead from 9 after the first quarter to 15 at Halftime.
Coming out of the half it was more of the same as the lead at one point grew to 30. But the Bears never gave up bringing the lead within 24 at the end of the third.
But not giving up wasn’t enough as Main South won 66-50 and the 4th quarter was the only quarter Abby Kelly out scored them in.
Speaking to Coach Ojeda following his teams Wednesday night win, he said “It feels good to get back in the win column and improve to 3-3. We still have a long way to go 12 games to be exact and we just need to focus on getting better and playing team basketball”.
I also talked to Team Captain Cheyton Marshall following Wednesday night’s game, he said “Feels good to get a win especially after losing back to back games, tonight we did a great job Rebounding, playing defense, and communicating which were some keys to getting that win. But we still need to work on ball movement and trusting each other because at the end of the day it’s a team sport.”
Marshall and Coach Ojeda are correct it’s a team sport indeed in what was a great team win for Main South as they prepare for Friday for South High another away game for the Cougars and for Abby Kelly they’ll look to bounce back against Bay Path when they go on the road to play Bay Path.
