Massachusetts State Police have confirmed that Samuel Ibikunle, 72, of Westborough was the victim in a wrong-way fatal crash in Hopkinton.
August 17, 2022 at approximately 12:15 a.m., Massachusetts State Police responded to reports of a wrong-way driver southbound on Interstate 495 northbound in Hopkinton. While Troopers responded to the area the wrong-way vehicle struck two vehicles traveling northbound.
Ibikunle, was traveling northbound when he was struck head-on by Devin Arroyo, 29, of Taunton, MA who was traveling the wrong way (southbound).
A tractor-trailer was traveling behind Ibikunle when he was struck by Arroyo and was unable to stop in time. The operator of the tractor trailer, Massachusetts State Police confirmed, was a 41-year-old man from Providence.
Ibikunle was transported by ambulance to the UMass Medical Center in Worcester where he was pronounced deceased as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Massachusetts State Police confirmed Arroyo was operating under the influence and was arrested for OUI-liquor.
