Worcester Red Sox Gearing Up For Third Outing With Durham Bulls

By Tiffany Williams –

It’s a hot Thursday in Worcester but the WooSox are gearing up for their third outing with the Durham Bulls (AAA-Tampa Bay Rays) at Polar Park in Worcester’s famous Canal District. This series kicked off Tuesday night with a 16-0 loss for Worcester and then in a midday game Wednesday, Worcester had a 3-1 loss.

Thursday night, Worcester is looking to snap their losing streak in this six-game series. But can they take care of the Durham Bulls Thursday night sending Boston Red Sox rehabbing RHP Michael Wacha to the mound?

New acquisition, Enmanuel Valdez made his Worcester debut Wednesday afternoon. He hit a homer to get the solo run of the game for Worcester. Thursday night, Worcester will need Valdez to show off a great performance but every Worcester player will need to come to Thursday nights game in full tank mode. Worcester has gone up against some tough opponents this season and they have taken care of business, they need to do just that tonight, take care of business. Get this win tonight and then lets worry about tomorrow night and Saturday night, and Sunday night.

Michael Wacha, who is having an outstanding season for the Boston Red Sox, will start for Worcester Thursday on an injury rehab assignment.  Wacha, who went on the Red Sox injured list on July 8, with right shoulder inflammation, is expected to pitch 4-innings tonight.  Before going on the IL, he was in the midst of a terrific season in his first year with the Red Sox going 6-1 with a 2.69 ERA in 13 starts – 70.1 IP, 56 H, 23 R, 21 ER, 22 BB, 50 SO – while holding opponents to a .215 batting average against.

Franchy Cordero, is back in Worcester after being optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday, Cordero has a .577 OPS and four errors in nine games since the All-Star break, and the Red Sox sent him to the minors with Rafael Devers returning from the injured list. Cordero will be in tonight’s lineup batting first and playing center field.
