This has been a week of Ohio in New England with the Toledo Mud Hens in Worcester for six-games against the Worcester Red Sox at Polar Park and the Akron Rubberducks in Hartford playing six against the Yard Goats at Dunkin Donuts Park.
In downtown Hartford Saturday, the Yard Goats beat the Akron Rubberducks (Cleveland Guardians) 4-3, in their fifth of just six games against the RubberDucks. Eric Rodriguez opened this contest up at the top of third hitting his first homer of the season for the Rubberducks to make it a 1-0 game. But at the bottom of the third the Yard Goats with both Isaac Collins and Ezequiel Tovar scoring made it a 1-2 game. At the top of the fourth the Rubberducks took the lead again with Raynel Delgado hitting his first homer of the season and driving in George Valera to put the Rubberducks on top 3-2. However the Rubberducks wouldn’t hold onto the lead for long with Daniel Montano at the bottom of the seventh, hitting his third homer of the season to tie this game 3-3 and then a wild pitch helped to drive in Ezequiel Tovar to put the Yard Goats on top 3-4.
In the Canal District, in Worcester on Saturday the Worcester Red Sox continued their six-game homestand with the Toledo Mud Hens who claimed a 2-1 win. After three scoreless innings at the bottom of the fourth, Ryan Fitzgerald got the first run of the game to put Worcester on top 0-1. But after six scoreless innings the Mud Hens took the lead at the top of the seventh with Derek Hill hitting a single to drive in Dustin Garneau and then Akil Baddoo hit his first triple to drive in Derek Hill to put the Mud Hens on top 2-1 to win the game.
In Reading, Pennsylvania the Portland Sea Dogs claimed a 9-3 victory in game five of six against the Fightin Phils. This was a contest that looked somewhat like a turning point for the Sea Dogs. It will be really interesting to see if that holds true going into Sunday’s finale of this series, and then going into next week’s six-game set against the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The hitting and scoring parade for the Sea Dogs started at the top of the third with Ceddanne Rafaela hitting his fourth double of the season to help drive in Elih Marrero and pi\ut the Sea Dogs ahead 1-0. Pedro Castellanos hit a single to help drive in Rafaela and that gave the Sea Dogs their 2-0 lead. But the Sea Dogs wouldn’t hold onto that lead for long with the Fightin Phils grabbing two runs at the bottom of the third to make it a 2-2 game and then grabbing another run at the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-3 Fightin Phils lead. After three scoreless innings, at the top of the seventh both Nick Sogard and Elih Marrero scored for the Seadogs to retake their lead in this game, 4-3. At the top of the eighth the hitting and scoring parade continued with Nick Sogard hitting a single to drive in Hudson Potts, Wil Dalton hit a single to drive in Tyler Dearden and Ceddanne Rafaela hit a single to drive in Nick Sogard for the Sea Dogs toke a 7-3 lead at the end of the 8th. To add insult to injury, the Sea Dogs at the top of the ninth got one last run over the plate with Pedro Castellanos to win this game 9-3.
Up North in Manchester, New Hampshire the Fisher Cats hosted the Somerset Patriots for game five of their six-game homestand. In this contest the Patriots came out on top with the 4-3 win. The Fisher Cats losing skid extended to seven straight.
