A Split Double-header For The Worcester Red Sox

Wednesday afternoon the Worcester Red Sox returned home to Polar Park in the Canal District for a double header and kick off their second homestand of the season and their first homestand of the season against the Buffalo Bison. In their inaugural season the Worcester Red Sox and the Buffalo Bisons met twelve times at Polar Park. 

For the starting three weeks of the season the Worcester Red Sox held onto the first place spot but as they return home Wednesday afternoon they have slid backward into the fourth place spot for the International League East after losing seven of their last twelve. Wednesday afternoon, in game one of their double header the Worcester Red Sox needed to do just one thing and that was to slide back into the winning column after a depressing 5-1 series against the Syracuse Mets.

The first inning of game one went scoreless but at the top of the second the Bisons had a homer in one run to make it a 2-0 Bisons lead. In the bottom of the fourth Jeter Downs hit his third homer of the season to make it a 2-1 Bisons lead and then at the bottom of the fourth the WooSox tooktheir lead in game one with Jarren Duran scoring first and then Christin Stewart hitting his third homer to drive in Jeter Downs to make it a 4-2 WooSox game. 

Game two got under way eventually after a rain delay and right away at the top of the first Nathan Lukes scored to make it a 1-0 Bisons lead and then at the bottom of the first Franchy Cordero hit a single to drive in Jeter Downs and make it a 1-1 tie game. At the top of the second Logan Warmoth sored to make it a 2-1 Bisons game. In the bottom of the second Yolmer Sanchez scored to tie the game up 2-2 but at the top of the third the Bisons took the lead of this game with a homer by Nick Podkul and then a run by Samad Taylor to make it a 4-2 lead. At the top of the sixth Samad Taylor hit a three run homer to make it a 7-2 Bisons lead. In the bottom of the 9th Ryan Fitzgerald hit a 6th homer of the season to drive in Christin Stewart and Yolmer Sanchez and make it a 7-5 Bisons game.

At today’s game it was “First Responder Wednesday” and the WooSox recognized Worcester Police Officer and Worcester native officer Angela Consiglio who has served 28 years with the Worcester Police Department.

During every home game the WooSox recognize a “Hometown Hero” and during today’s Double-header the WooSox recognized Jamaine “The Technician” Ortiz a local professional boxer who is a rising starr. Recently Ortiz appeared on Showtime in a fight against Nahir Albright and claimed a victory. On May 21st, Ortiz will be back in the ring to defend his title against 2012 U.S. Olympian Jamel Herring. This Friday night, Ortiz will join the NewsTalk New England crew to co-host a live broadcast of New England’s Future 9 alongside Holy Cross Wide Receiver Ayir Asante and Jonathan Burgos.
