Baseball has returned to the Canal District in Worcester with the 1st-place Worcester Red Sox hosting the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA-Philadelphia Phillies) and claiming an 8-3 win. The WooSox have now won their last seven contests and the season is still young.
The Worcester Red Sox returned home to kick off their second season In Worcester. Last season the Worcester Red Sox and the Iron Pigs played six series against each other with the WooSox winning four and the IronPigs taking two.
The Worcester Red Sox got into this game early with Roberto Ramos getting the first run of the game to give the WooSox a 0-1 lead. In the bottom of the 5th the Worcester Red Sox made it a 0-2 game with Yolmer Sanchez scoring. At the top of the 6th the Iron Pigs had two runs to make it a 2-2 tie game but at the bottom of the 6th Yolmer Sanchez hit his second homer of the season 364 feet to right field and Ryan Fitgerald scored to make it a 2-4 WooSox lead. Triston Casas then hit his second homer of the season 477 feet to right center and Jeter Downs scored to make it a 2-6 WooSox lead. The Iron Pigs had one run at the top of the 7th and then at the bottom of the 7th Ryan Fitzgerald hit his 4th homer of the season 365 feet right center and Christin Stewart scored.
The WooSox and the Iron Pigs will meet for game two of this six game homestand Wednesday night at 6:45 PM and it is Give-A-Wednesday.
Every Wednesday night game will feature a specialty bobblehead to be given away on entrance! This Wednesday fans will receive a free Triston Casas bobblehead. Also, kids get a free trinket presented by UniBank.
Wednesday night is also “First Responder Wednesday.” First responders receive 4 free tickets on Wednesdays when showing their credentials at the WooSox Ticket Office. Presented by National Grid
The WooSox also announced something new and awesome this year called “Town Takeover” and Wednesday night is “The 413 Night.” The WooSox said, “Tickets purchased for each “Town Takeover” night will benefit a non-profit from that town. At the end of the season, the town with the largest turnout will be rewarded with a trophy and special recognition!”
