
Massachusetts is rewriting the playbook on what it means to graduate high school.
Governor Maura Healey and Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll rolled out the administration’s new “Vision of a Massachusetts Graduate” at Attleboro High School today—a sweeping framework that redefines a high school diploma as more than a piece of paper. It’s about producing thinkers, contributors, and leaders ready for college, careers, and civic life.
The Vision is the product of Healey’s Statewide K-12 Graduation Council, created earlier this year. Thousands of survey responses, listening sessions, and input from students, parents, teachers, and business leaders shaped the final blueprint. At its core: six key skills wrapped into three qualities every student should leave with—academic strength and critical problem-solving, self-awareness and collaboration, and the ability to communicate and lead responsibly.
“Massachusetts has always led the way in education, and this Vision builds on that legacy,” Healey said. “We want graduates who can solve problems, work with others, and step into the world with confidence.”
Driscoll added, “This is about developing self-aware, confident graduates who can contribute meaningfully to schools, workplaces, and communities.”
The rollout comes as the state pushes to create consistent, rigorous graduation standards across all districts, ending the patchwork of requirements that vary from town to town. The Council will deliver formal recommendations later this year, with a roadmap due in 2026.
State Education Secretary Patrick Tutwiler called the plan “a unifying blueprint,” while Elementary and Secondary Education Commissioner Pedro Martinez stressed that the goal is preparing every student “to make decisions responsibly and succeed beyond school.”
The administration deliberately chose Attleboro High for the unveiling, pointing to its early-college programs and career-connected coursework as a model for what the Vision aims to scale statewide. Local leaders backed the move, with Attleboro’s mayor calling the high school “direct proof” of the city’s commitment to preparing students for life after graduation.
Lawmakers and education advocates from across the state lined up behind the rollout, with House Speaker Ronald Mariano calling it “about fairness and opportunity” and Senator Jason Lewis touting it as “a non-test-based, consistent, and rigorous standard.” Students had a voice too—Norton High’s Annabelle Griffith said the plan “captures what truly matters for our future… not just grades, but becoming creative problem-solvers, thoughtful citizens, and resilient people.”
The Graduation Council is now tasked with turning vision into policy. The stakes are high: a statewide definition of what every diploma should mean.
