March madness? Try NBA mayhem.
Monday night across the league felt less like a routine March slate and more like a demolition derby — starring a handful of scorers who lit up defenses while several supposed contenders got punched in the mouth.
In Atlanta, the Atlanta Hawks torched the Orlando Magic 124–112 behind a career-type eruption from Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who exploded for 41 points and made Orlando’s perimeter defense look like a turnstile at rush hour. The Magic had no counterpunch. Paolo Banchero finished with just 18 points and spent much of the night watching Atlanta’s offense carve up his team like a Thanksgiving turkey.
Golden State went into Washington and survived a strange shootout as the Golden State Warriors beat the Washington Wizards 125–117. The twist? The night belonged to Washington’s seven-foot sniper. Kristaps Porzingis poured in 30 points and stretched the floor all evening, but it still wasn’t enough to save a Wizards defense that continues to leak points like a cracked faucet. Rookie wing Bilal Coulibaly added 21 but Washington still couldn’t close the gap.
Over in Brooklyn, the Portland Trail Blazers turned the Brooklyn Nets into roadkill. Portland cruised 114–95 with Deni Avdija leading the way with 18 points in a balanced attack. Brooklyn’s scoring leader was Chaney Johnson with 17 — and that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about how ugly this one was for the Nets.
Then came the heavyweight clash in Boston — and the Boston Celtics reminded everyone why the TD Garden is still one of the nastiest arenas in the league. Boston knocked off the Phoenix Suns 120–112 thanks to a monster night from Jaylen Brown, who detonated for 41 points. Devin Booker fired back with 40 for Phoenix, but the Suns once again leaned too heavily on their stars and paid the price late.
Chicago delivered the night’s most brutal beating. The Chicago Bulls steamrolled the Memphis Grizzlies 132–107, powered by rookie forward Matas Buzelis dropping 29 points in a breakout performance. Memphis looked flat, disorganized, and frankly overwhelmed. Their top scorer, Cedric Coward, managed just 17 while the defense collapsed repeatedly.
Down in New Orleans, the New Orleans Pelicans handled the Dallas Mavericks 129–111 as Zion Williamson bullied his way to 27 points in the paint. The strangest stat line of the night came from Dallas’ Naji Marshall, who scored 32 in a losing effort — the kind of empty-calorie scoring line that looks nice in the box score but didn’t change the game’s direction.
The Houston Rockets hosted the Los Angeles Lakers and got a rude awakening. The Lakers grinded out a 100–92 win over the Rockets behind another surgical scoring night from Luka Doncic, who poured in 36 points and controlled the pace like a chess grandmaster moving pieces two steps ahead. Houston’s best answer was Jabari Smith Jr. with 22, but the Rockets never truly seized momentum.
Finally in Los Angeles, the San Antonio Spurs pulled off the upset of the night, slipping past the Los Angeles Clippers 119–115. Rookie guard Stephon Castle delivered 23 clutch points, showing nerves of steel in the closing minutes. The Clippers got 25 from Darius Garland, but defensive lapses down the stretch left the home crowd stunned.
Eight games. Fireworks everywhere. Defense optional in most arenas.
And if Monday proved anything, it’s this: March in the NBA isn’t about coasting toward the playoffs.
It’s about survival.
