NORTHAMPTON — As temperatures plunge, the City of Northampton is opening warming centers for residents and visitors needing a safe, heated space. The centers will operate Wednesday, January 21, through Sunday, January 25, with varying hours. The city urged those experiencing houselessness or needing shelter during extreme cold to use these facilities.

Officials warned that frostbite can develop in as little as 10 to 15 minutes in extreme cold, particularly with wind. Common signs include numbness, pale or waxy skin, and hard or frozen-feeling skin, often affecting fingers, toes, ears, nose, and cheeks. Residents are advised to limit outdoor time, dress in warm layers, cover exposed skin, and check on those at higher risk, including older adults, young children, people with chronic conditions, and those without heat. Anyone showing signs of frostbite or hypothermia should seek immediate medical attention.

Community members are encouraged to check on neighbors, share information about warming centers and shelters, and contact local outreach services for anyone appearing in need. The city worked with nonprofit organizations to ensure the centers are accessible and provide basic services and support.

Key locations include St. John’s Episcopal Church, open as an emergency shelter during inclement weather below 15 degrees, and the Division of Community Care, which operates a community space and mobile response services. Other centers include Clinical & Support Options on Industrial Drive East, Manna Community Center on Elm Street, Northampton Senior Center on Conz Street, Forbes Library on West Street, Northampton Police Department at 29 Center Street, and Lilly Library in Florence. Residents seeking information on services can contact the Northampton Department of Health and Human Services at 413-587-1215 or the Mayor’s office at 413-587-1249 or mayor@northamptonma.gov.
