Worcester Red Sox Shortstop Jeter Downs has been designated for assignment by the Red Sox.
Downs, who was traded to the Red Sox in 2020 along with Alex Verdugo and catcher Connor Wong in the trade for Mookie Betts, has been with Triple-A Worcester. He hit .193 with a .661 OPS to go along with 30 homers and 72 RBIs.
In the 2022 season, Downs got a taste of the game with the Red Sox major league club and he hit .154 with a .427 OPS to go along with a home run and four RBIs in 14 games.
“This was a tough one,” said Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom. “The fact that he was in a position where we considered him and chose him to be designated I think just speaks to some of the struggles we’ve had getting him on track.
“I’m glad he was able to get to the big leagues with us, glad he was able to have a moment with us here at Fenway, help us win a big game,” said Bloom. “That was a lot of fun for a lot of people, but obviously, we haven’t been able to get him to that success as consistently as anybody would like with Jeter.”
Downs being designated for assignment, he will immediately be removed from the Red Sox 40-man roster. Within seven days of being designated for assignment, Downs can either be traded or placed on irrevocable outright waivers. If Downs is claimed off waivers by another club, he will immediately be added to that team’s 40-man roster, at which point he can be optioned to the Minor Leagues or assigned to his new team’s 26-man roster.
If Downs clears waivers, he could be sent outright to the WooSox or be released.
