Boston Red Sox Fall to Cleveland Guardians in Series Finale

By Zachary McMahon –

The Boston Red Sox played the series finale against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field in Cleveland on Thursday afternoon. The series was knotted up at one game a piece after the Red Sox shut out Cleveland on Wednesday night, 8-0.

It was a bullpen game for the Red Sox as Brayan Bello was due to start before he landed on the 15-day injured list due to tightness in his back. Chase Anderson got the start for the Red Sox for the first time this season.

He got knocked out in the second inning after a grand slam by Jose Ramirez after McGwire could not hold onto the foul tip, which would’ve stuck him out. He was replaced by Brennan Bernardino, who pitched the rest of the second, and the whole third.

In the first inning, both Rob Refsnyder and Wilyer Abreu were on the opposite sides in the outfield, in the wrong position and it caused a ball to go against Anderson, because of the pitch clock violation.

In the third inning, Refsnyder had an RBI triple that scored home designated hitter Rafael Devers, and then Refsnyder scored on a sacrifice fly from Abreu.

Then in the sixth inning, the Sox cut the deficit to within one run off RBIs from Ceddane Rafaela and Jarren Duran. But, they were shut down in the last three innings, and Ramirez scored an insurance run for the Guardians when Resse McGwire had a passed ball, from dropping a pitch from Greg Weissert in the seventh.

The Guardians won the series 2-1 against the Red Sox and won the season series 5-2, after taking the 3-1 series win at Fenway Park that ended last Thursday.

The Red Sox will start a weekend series for the first intra-league series of the season at Fenway when they face the Chicago Cubs on Friday at 7:10 pm on NESN/NESN360, and Kutter Craford will be going up against Shota Imangha when they both start on the mound.
