BOSTON — A carjacking suspect is dead after a violent confrontation with police late Wednesday night in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston.
The chaos began just before 10:00 p.m. when authorities received a report of a carjacking on Tremont Street in the Mission Hill section of the city.
Police quickly tracked the stolen vehicle and located it near Linwood Square.
During a late-night press conference, Michael Cox said officers approached the vehicle on foot and issued multiple verbal commands. Investigators say the suspect refused to comply.
Instead, the situation escalated.
According to investigators, the suspect suddenly accelerated the vehicle, striking a Boston police cruiser in an attempt to escape. A department spokesperson said the suspect also tried to hit officers with the vehicle.
That’s when gunfire erupted.
At least one officer discharged their weapon, striking the suspect.
The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
Authorities say the officers involved were also transported to a hospital for evaluation, according to Kevin Hayden.
The shooting is now under investigation by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
The deadly confrontation adds another intense chapter to an already dangerous situation that unfolded in seconds — a reported carjacking, a suspect attempting to flee, and a violent encounter with police that ended with a life lost and investigators now working to determine exactly how the deadly moment unfolded.
