WORCESTER, Mass. — A chaotic scene outside a grocery store in Worcester, Massachusetts quickly escalated Monday afternoon after witnesses reported a man running through a busy shopping area with a gun tucked into his waistband.
At approximately 1:39 p.m. on March 9, 2026, officers with the Worcester Police Department were dispatched to a grocery store on Southbridge Street for a report of a person with a gun.
According to police, a witness told officers he observed a male with a firearm tucked in his waistband. The witness called police since the firearm was not in a holster.
Authorities say the situation appeared increasingly erratic.
Police say the male was running around the parking lot and running in and out of stores, alarming people in the area.
Officers began searching the neighborhood for the suspect.
A male matching the description was later located by officers on Boys and Girls Club Way.
Police say a firearm was wound inside of his pants.
Investigators determined the man had a suspended license to carry.
Police identified the suspect as 27-year-old Alex Marrero of Fitchburg.
Marrero is now charged with Possession of a Large Capacity Firearm, Carrying a Loaded Firearm Without a License, Possession of a Firearm Without an FID Card, Possession of Ammunition Without an FID Card and Disorderly Conduct.
The investigation remains ongoing.
