CHELSEA, Mass. — A raging fire swept through a multi-family home in Chelsea on Tuesday evening, displacing residents and leaving one building a total loss, officials said.
Fire crews were dispatched to Cottage Street and encountered heavy fire on two floors of the structure. The fire began at a multi-family house at 58 Cottage Street and quickly spread, sending flames into an adjacent building.
No injuries were reported. Chelsea Fire Chief John Quatieri said everyone made it out safely.
Chelsea Fire Chief Jon Quatieri said seven residents were displaced and that the building is considered to be a total loss.
The fire extended to one of the buildings immediately next to the home where the blaze originated. The side walls on the second and third floors appeared to be completely destroyed by the flames. The rear staircase of the building collapsed entirely, and the roof began to sag and cave in as the fire progressed.
As conditions inside the structure deteriorated and the building became increasingly dangerous, firefighters were ordered to evacuate, Quatieri said. Crews were able to bring the fire under control by approximately 8:45 p.m.
Damage to the neighboring building was reported, though the extent was not specified. The cause of the fire remains under investigation
