BRONX, N.Y. — A Rikers Island inmate has been indicted on multiple felony charges after allegedly slashing a correction officer in the face inside a jail facility, prosecutors said.

Shemar Hassani-Shaw, 24, of Brooklyn, was arraigned Monday in Bronx Supreme Court before Justice George Villegas. He is charged with two counts of attempted assault in the first degree, attempted assault in the second degree, three counts of assault in the second degree, two counts of promoting prison contraband in the first degree, two counts of promoting prison contraband in the second degree, obstructing governmental administration, assault in the third degree, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

Bail was continued at $100,000 cash or $300,000 bond. Hassani-Shaw is due back in court on March 11, 2026.

According to the investigation, the incident occurred on Dec. 3, 2025, at approximately 9:46 a.m. inside the Otis Bantum Correctional Center on Rikers Island. Authorities said Hassani-Shaw approached a correction officer from behind while holding a sharp object and allegedly slashed the officer across the cheek.

After the defendant was stopped, investigators said he threw a sharp metal object to the ground. During a subsequent search, a sharpened piece of plastic fell from the defendant’s person. Both items were recovered.

The injured correction officer’s condition was not disclosed. The case remains pending in Bronx Supreme Court.
