The Worcester Red Sox hosted the Buffalo Bisons at Polar Park in Worcester, MA on Tuesday night. The WooSox were coming off a series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders in which they dropped all but the finale. They won Sunday’s game 6-5 to snap what was a seven-game losing streak dating back to July 20.
After loading the bases in the top of the first inning, Rafael Lantigua scored on a sacrifice fly from Damiano Palmegiani with two outs, giving Buffalo an early 1-0 lead. After a four-pitch walk to Alan Roden, the bases were once again loaded, still with two outs. Cam Eden would single on an 0-2 pitch to right field, allowing two more runs to score to extend Buffalo’s lead to 3-0.
They would add another run in the top of the second as Miguel Hiraldo scored on a single to center field. Nathan Hickey got the Sox on the board for the first time on the night in the bottom of the third inning with a solo shot to right field.
They would add two more as Emmanuel Valdez singled into left field, scoring both Mark Contreras and Nick Sogard. Valdez was thrown out at second, however, and the inning ended with the WooSox still trailing 4-3.
That would also end the night for Worcester starting pitcher Chase Shugart. He finished giving up six hits and four runs, all earned, while striking out just three in 3 IP. With the based loaded with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sogard singled to center field, allowing two runs to score and giving the WooSox their first lead of the game at 5-4.
Palmegiani would give the Bisons a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer to left field. The WooSox would re-take the lead with a two-run homer from Mickey Gasper. They would break the game open with four more runs between the fourth and seventh innings and would ultimately go on to win by a final score of 11-6.
The WooSox are now on a two-game win streak after a seven-game skid. The two teams will meet for the second game of the series tomorrow night with first pitch once again being set for 6:45 p.m. ET.
