As of Wednesday 18 additional victims were found in the rubble of the Surfside condo collapse, bringing the total death toll to 54.
As additional victims were found the decision was also made to switch the focus from rescue to recovery. At a press conference Wednesday night, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava called it an “extremely difficult decision.”
With 86 people still potentially unaccounted for, Miami-Dade Assistant Fire Chief Ray Jadallah told families on Wednesday at a private briefing that rescue dogs would be removed, however crews would still search through rubble for the bodies of their relatives.
